Birdie and The Beanstalk

By Meg Greene

Recommended for ages 2+
Duration: 45 minutes

ABOUT THE SHOW: Jack has gone up the beanstalk, leaving his little sister Birdie below as the lookout. Birdie wants to help Jack, but something is stopping her – her fear of something terrible happening. As Jack’s quest in the Giant World becomes dangerous, Birdie’s fear grows. When Jack needs her help, Birdie has to summon the courage to overcome her fear by naming it, calming it, finding safety, and eventually taming her fear. With the help of Clementine the Cow and the audience, Birdie realizes she can embrace her fear to protect her family.

Birdie and The Beanstalk reimagines the classic tale of Jack and The Beanstalk using puppets and live actors.

Note from the director:

What does it mean to face your fears? For young people, this can be a very difficult, abstract process. How can we, as grow-ups, help them through this emotional journey?

One way to navigate facing fear is through storytelling and imaginative play. Birdie and The Beanstalk utilizes the classic tale of Jack and the Beanstalk and gives young people the opportunity to take an active role in the characters' worlds. Ultimately the young people gain agency and help their friends on stage equip themselves with tools to face their fears. At the same time, young people transfer these same tools to their own world.

It is my belief that theater for children should be grounded in quality literature. This play offers the chance to revisit this classic tale, or be introduced to it for the first time.

We hope you enjoy our show.
